Summer Singing

Summer Singing

We’re wrapping up our current units and all the special little extras we put in place during the summer season. We’ve been singing, playing, learning ukulele and drumming too. We’ve been pretending to be pirates or birds, and we’ve even gone on imaginary cruises searching for sea animals! Our summer units are such a delight and your children have made it a special time at the studio.

We have been continually adding more friends to our classes as new families check out what Kindermusik is all about. We love welcoming new friends! (If you have a friend you’d like to introduce to Kindermusik, don’t forget to invite them to our Drop-In Day on August 28th!)

As we approach our summer pause for August, we hope you’ll want to keep the music going at home! Children rely on routine in order to feel secure, safe, and confident. A disruption in routine can be unsettling for them, such as suddenly not going to see their music friends! So consider taking the time usually reserved for your Kindermusik class and engage in some at-home music making.

Some ideas:

1. Kindermusik App. Have you checked out the Crafts and Activities section? There are lots of fun ideas of things to do with your kids there. And of course stream the playlist from your favorite unit. You can play “remember when” games with some of your favorite songs.  Play a familiar tune and ask your child “Remember when we danced to this with Ms Katie?” “Do you remember when we bounced on the floor to this song with Ms Rachel? Let’s bounce again right now.”

2. Music Festivals. There are always a plethora of outdoor music festivals in the summertime. Look around and see what you can find. Pack a picnic, take your little ones, and make a memory enjoying fantastic music in a beautiful outdoor venue. Consider Deer Valley’s music festival as they celebrate the cinematic orchestral music of John Williams!

3. Family Band. Grab what instruments you’ve got at home. Don’t have any? Make some simple percussion instruments out of pots and pans and plastic containers filled with beans. Shake and drum away and sing your favorite songs – the sillier the better! You can improv songs about each family member and make up lyrics about what you love about each other.

4. Kindermusik Rituals. Sing your class Hello Song when you greet your baby in the morning. Use the I Love You Ritual when you put them down for a nap. Do lap bounces during playtime. Do some of those crossies and double doodles when your kid needs a physiological or emotional reset. Wish Well to grandma as she leaves after a visit.

Kindermusik is a practice. The things we do in class can easily be adapted at home to give your kids that sense of fun and to keep their bodies and brains regulated.

We’ll make music with you again soon!
