Early Childhood Music Classes Build Bigger Brains

Most caregivers enroll in Kindermusik because they want a fun activity to do with their child that gets them out of the house. But with all that fun and connection, you are actually getting so much more. One of the developmental benefits of Kindermusik is that it sets your child on a trajectory of better brain functioning, growth, and health.

🧠 Music Helps the Brain Grow Stronger

Musical exposure, experiences, and classes literally build bigger brains. Neurologists have found that musicians have a larger and thicker corpus callosum, the tissue that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. This is especially true of musicians who studied music prior to the age of 7.

This part of the brain is responsible for integrating the two hemispheres and is involved in cross-hemispheric functions such as:

  • Movement coordination
  • Learning and memory
  • Emotional regulation
  • Higher order cognition

🧠 Music Helps the Brain Grow Healthier

Music and instrument study has shown to increase levels of BDNF in the brain. That stands for Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor. It’s a growth protein found in the brain that is necessary for neurological health and functioning.

Boosting BDNF promotes the growth and survival of new neurons, allowing for neuroplasticity. Basically this means that people can learn new things throughout their lifespans. The more BDNF the easier the brain can adapt and make new connections.

BDNF decreases the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimers, dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s, depression, and anxiety. You can boost your BDNF levels through exercise, proper nutrition, good sleep, and mental stimulation. Among the most effective mental stimulation activities is learning a musical instrument, learning to read music, and learning a new repertoire piece.

Most of those activities occur later in life after a childhood foundation of musical learning. Investing in your child’s education in music, and giving them the gift of musical fluency will benefit their brain health throughout their lifespan.

Not only is Kindermusik fun in the here and now, but it also is building a foundation of brain health for your child’s future.
